Four decades after its birth, Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody still fascinated listeners. So far, the song has sold more than 6 million copies worldwide, one of the best-selling singles of all time.
When the Bohemian Rhapsody recording, lead singer Freddie Mercury announced that the song would change all the old notions of recording. Mercury composed Bohemian Rhapsody based on a song by band Ibex, the band he joined before joining Queen in the 1960s.
In 1976, Bohemian Rhapsody took the No. 1 spot in the UK chart and became one of the band’s hit songs to be in the Top 10 charts in the US.
This song has 17 weeks of reigning in the charts worldwide. In 1992, it returned to the top position in the US chart for 3 months, after appearing in the comedy comedy Wayne’s World. In the digital era, this song is still outstanding and is among the 10 most downloaded songs in rock history.
Bohemian Rhapsody sparked a landmark year for Queen. It was released after the band released Killer Queen, their first single reached the top 40 charts in the US in the first half of 1975, creating momentum for the band to perform a major tour.
Killer Queen’s success has made fans more interested in the band’s fourth album, titled A Night At The Opera. With a huge budget, the band and producer Roy Thomas Baker put a lot of effort into making albums and investing heavily in Bohemian Rhapsody. The recording began on August 24, 1975, at a recording studio in Wales.
In fact, Mercury has been composing this song for many years, based on the melody of The Cowboy Song. Producer Baker first heard the song in Mercury’s apartment and immediately realized that it would outperform the previous Queen’s works.
To record Bohemian Rhapsody, Queen took nearly 90 hours to make a voiceover, to create an effect like a 84-person choir at an opera-sounding piece in the song.
To create the effect, the group collected many different parts, on separate tapes, and then collected them all on one main tape. Then the group cut off the excess, not good, and then use the tape to stick the pieces like that, forming a complete part of the singing.
This effect was used primarily for opera recording, but Queen used it at least in the previous two songs, Killer Queen and Bicycle Race. The hard-rock segment in the song is also a big challenge for Brian May.
Mercury wrote a chasing guitar riff, like many guitar playing together. Later, May confessed that he had a “real war” when playing the solo. At the end of the lesson, the group uses gong to finish.
In this song, Mercury used both Italian comedy, Spanish folk dance, opera songs by Rossini and Mozart (Figaro). All of the band’s almost excessive requests are fully met by Baker.
As for the content, the segments of the song are quite loosely coupled, but the listeners can understand that it is the penance of a young man who committed murder before the penance.
What does this song mean? Mercury never explained its meaning in interviews. He likes to let listeners decide.
At first, Queen’s record company said they were crazy when recording this song. The company’s executives also persuaded the band to “cut and trim” sensitive parts, reducing the capacity to less than 6 minutes, making it easier to broadcast, broadcast by producers. The bar was accustomed to singles only 3 minutes long. Song Queen refused bluntly.
In order to enhance the “noise” for the song, Queen also made an accompanying video, which incorporates the band’s live performance with impressive visual images, in order to increase the feel of the song. .
Bohemian Rhapsody songs and accompanying videos have made Queen rock stars. Their performances in the stadiums are always filled with audiences. However, when Mercury died in 1991, at the age of 45, the band faded in the public mind.
Later, Bohemian Rhapsody once again brought the band back to the public, when its melody rang out in Wayne’s World. The film’s actor Mike Myers said he had to fight the director so that the song could be used in the film, even threatening to remove the role if it wasn’t met.
Unfortunately, Mercury was no longer alive to see his work continue to storm in Wayne’s World and on music charts later.
